How did
we vote?

The North Panhandle residents are a politically involved community, as you
might have known already. Did you ever wonder if you and your neighbors vote
similarly? We crunched some of the election data to see how our neighborhood
resembles and differs from the rest of our city and the rest of our state.
On November 8, NOPA residents voted at a higher rate

FROM THE BOARD
We are all dealing with the aftermath of a tumultuous and contentious
election season which — regardless of political views — did not represent
the best of ourselves or the country in which we live.
Many of us were left wondering how to build a better place — one that
accepts our diversity, cares about the environment, and works towards
a safer planet.
Paraphrasing a wise proverb — if you want to fix your country, you need to
start at home. This is your chance. Get involved in your neighborhood and
city — now.
Though national issues fill our TVs and social media feeds, we start the
new year remembering that the most direct impacts on the lives of the
people of the community are made at the local level. And that’s where
we put our efforts.
The NOPNA board is looking forward to another year of events —
neighborhood meetings, block parties, Sunday Streets, Halloween
festivities and our annual Holiday party — intended to bring us together
as a community. These are opportunities to meet new people, learn
about our neighbors, and do great things for our area.
NOPNA leads regular volunteer events such cleanup and restoration
of the panhandle, working with our local small business owners and
promoting safety through active engagement of SFPD. We advocate
on behalf of the neighborhood for city improvements — like safer bike
and pedestrian pathways.
We want to continue to meaningfully impact the people of this community
and provide opportunities for engagement and community improvement
for anyone who is interested. We may have less influ-
ence over national events than we would like —
but we can, and will, work to make our
neighborhood a better place.
Get involved and volunteer! Come to a
neighborhood meeting, volunteer, and
participate. There is no time like 2017
to make a difference.

Holiday Party: Ugly Sweaters and Tasty Baklava
This year’s Holiday party was another great success with
dozens of neighbors turning out for a night of great food,
drinks, ugly sweaters, and good neighborly fun.
Neighbors convened at the always welcoming Jannah,
Bagdad by the Bay, to get to know one another, reflect
on the election results, and chat about upcoming holiday
plans. The conversation was second only to the delicious
hummus, baba ghanoush, and baklava.
Supervisor London Breed joined in the festivities, exhort-
ing us all to enjoy the holidays and celebrate the year —
adding with a smile, that we could wait until New Years
to call her office with complaints. She also presented a
Certificate of Honor from the City of San Francisco to
the winner of the — surprisingly competitive — Ugliest
Sweater Contest!
Jason Cauthen is a San Francisco native and wore an ugly
sweater to the holiday party.

Bay Area Bike Share Comes to NOPA
issue 1 : 2017 | 9
Bay Area Bike Share is expanding
from 450 to 4500 bikes in San Fran-
cisco alone by mid-2018. They will
enter for the first time into the East
Bay and expand San Jose to 1000
bikes. To determine where the best
locations are, they’ve held workshops
(including at our neighborhood
meeting) to solicit input and outline
the limitations. They have a proposed
expansion with the North Panhan-

Spring 2017.

35 street trees planted
Neighbors and Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) gathered on Saturday,
October 1, to plant 35 street trees in NOPA and the Lone Mountain area.
The picture shows the planting of 4 healthy Primrose trees on Golden Gate
Avenue near Lyon. 10 year old Lukas, also a Golden Gate Avenue resident,
helped in the effort by digging a hole and pounding in the support stakes.
In over 3 decades, FUF has supported planting almost 50,000 trees according
to a recent estimate. Numerous FUF plantings have occurred in the last few
years within the NOPA area. FUF successfully advocated for Proposition E for
the Novem ber ballot to support a healthy urban forest.

laws. Traffic calming measures (e.g. speed bumps, pedes-
trian bulb-outs) are another way to keep speeds consis-

neighbors on whether you think these measures may be
appropriate for our streets, and if so — where. You can

Hello NOPA Neighbors, it is with much excitement that
Declan and I share that we’ve made the strategic move to
join the Compass team and support the launch of its San
Francisco office.
Although Compass is new to our San Francisco market, they
have already transformed the real estate process for clients
in major cities around the country. As a technology-based
real estate platform, Compass is building smarter, more
sophisticated experiences for San Francisco’s buyers and
sellers with best-in-class technologists from Google, Apple,
and Facebook creating the company’s proprietary tools for
instantly accessing market data and precisely targeting the
right buyers. For us, that means we can now better serve our
clients more efficiently and effectively in NOPA, and beyond!
Change is exciting and it’s our belief that Compass
is building the future of real estate, and we feel more
confident than ever in our ability to provide you with
exceptional service and help you achieve your goals.
As always, please reach out to us with any real estate
inquiries. We’re always very grateful for the opportunity to
assist with determining your property’s value, or discussing
any plans on the horizon.
